Aikido training beyond the tatami

Aikido is learned primarily on the tatami – in movement, in contact with a partner, and under the guidance of a teacher. Yet every aikidoka knows those moments when they are away from the dojo and mentally reviewing techniques, attacks, or the course of an exam.

For exactly those moments, we have prepared a new digital tool on the Aikido Vráble website that can serve as a study aid for aikido outside of training.

This is not a substitute for training. It is a supplement that helps you stay in “training mode” even when you are not on the tatami.

Aikido Attack Quiz

The first part is an interactive attack quiz. An image of an attack is shown and you choose from four options. Your task is to select the correct name.

  • practice attack terminology
  • quickly test your knowledge
  • strengthen the connection between name and movement

Digital Exam Syllabus

An overview of techniques from 6th kyu to 1st kyu according to the exam syllabus of the Slovak Aikido Association.

  • clear technique naming
  • attack illustration
  • technique illustration (the image depicts the technique as a principle, not always its exact variation)
  • organized by principles and elements

Training Mode

Turn on the timer and practice techniques at intervals of 30 to 90 seconds. Go through techniques one by one, try them with an imaginary partner, or simply review them mentally.

Who is it for

  • practitioners preparing for kyu exams
  • students who want to review techniques outside of training
  • beginners who want to better memorize attacks and techniques

The goal is simple: help you stay connected with aikido even off the tatami. Try the quiz or browse the techniques and turn on training mode.

Acknowledgments and Sources

The illustrations and technique structure were guided by materials available on the Slovak Aikido Association website: the SAA exam syllabus, Basic Techniques posters, and Basic Attacks posters. These materials are based on the didactic system of aikido according to Masatomi Ikeda Sensei and were created by the Dojo de Neuchâtel.
