Keiko: aikido practice beyond the tatami

A glossary of 139 Japanese terms, an attack quiz and the exam syllabus with a timed training mode. Free, no registration, also offline.

Aikido is learned mainly on the tatami: in movement, in contact with a partner and under a teacher’s guidance. But every aikidoka knows the moments away from the dojo when techniques, attacks or an upcoming exam run through their head. Keiko (稽古), Japanese for “practice”, is made for those moments.

It is not a replacement for training. It keeps you in training mode when you are not on the tatami.

What you will find

  • Glossary: 139 Japanese terms with kanji, romaji and meaning. Each term has its own page and can be practised in a quiz with three modes: from Japanese, into Japanese and reading kanji.
  • Attack quiz: 21 attacks shown as illustrations, with four answer options.
  • Exams: the 6th to 1st kyu sets from the SAA syllabus, with attack and technique illustrations. The training mode takes you through the techniques one by one, with a timer and a sound signal.
  • Principles: techniques grouped by the four principles (striking, control, throwing, cutting) and elements (water, earth, wind, fire), as taught by Masatomi Ikeda Sensei.

On your phone, even without signal

You can add Keiko to your home screen like an app. The main parts work offline, for example in a gym with no signal. Your best quiz results are remembered by your browser, no registration needed.

The illustrations are based on Slovak Aikido Association material, the Basic Techniques and Basic Attacks posters created by Dojo de Neuchâtel after Masatomi Ikeda Sensei’s didactic system.
