Morihei Ueshiba – founder of aikido

Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art characterized primarily by its defensive strategy. It is based on the principle of non-aggression and develops the practitioner both physically and mentally.

In addition to strikes, joint locks, and throws, the opponent’s actions are neutralized through horizontal, vertical, diagonal, circular, spherical, and spiral movements around the defender’s hips.

The name Aikido consists of three characters: “AI” means harmony, “KI” is life energy, and “DO” means the way. It can also be understood as a way of life, and we could freely translate AIKIDO as “the way of harmony.”

Its creator and founder is Morihei Ueshiba (jap. 植芝 盛平; * December 14, 1883 – † April 26, 1969), who was a martial arts teacher and the founder of aikido. He is also often referred to by aikido students as Kaiso (開 祖) – “founder” or O’Sensei (翁先生) – “great teacher.”
“Failure is the key to success; each mistake teaches us something.”
“An attack is proof that one is out of control.”
“Heaven is right where you are standing, and that is the place to train.”
― Morihei Ueshiba
